LMYPHOEDEMA

Products for the treatment of Lymphoedema of the Arm and Leg

Compression plays an important part in the treatment of Lymphoedema. Not only does the garment increase the pressure within the tissues thus encouraging lymph to be redistributed and drained but more importantly it reinforces the skin making a firm wall to the limb and so increases the efficiency of the muscular pumping systems within the limb. Thus encouraging lymph flow.

Regular, but not overvigorous exercise is therefore important when these garments have been fitted. If a Compression Pump is used to assist reducing limb size then it is very important that a compression garment is worn between pumping sessions, otherwise any benefit gained from the use of the pump will not be maintained.

For the treatment of temporary of permanent oedema of the hand and arm or leg resulting from:

  1. Primary Lymphoedema
  2. Lymphoedema following:
  1. Mastectomy
  2. Radiotherapy treatment
  3. Immobility as caused by stroke or plaster encasement
  4. Cellulitis and other infections
  5. Trauma or surgery where the lymphatics have been damaged

Selection of the correct garment

MEDI compression sleeves and mittens overcome many of the earlier objections to this type of garment on the ground of lack of acceptability by patients. These garments are knitted on modern graduated elastic hosiery machines, are designed to be comfortable and cosmetically acceptable.

All these garments are available from RES. Please phone 8276 2613 for exact details.
